Vattenfall chose Aidon’s future-proof radio solution for smart metering pilot

Vattenfall Eldistribution AB, one of the largest energy distribution companies in Sweden, has chosen Aidon’s technology to one of their smart metering pilot projects that they will run in 2017-2018. The purpose of the pilot project is to test robustness, performance and response time of new smart metering communication technologies as well as to evaluate additional technical functionalities of the metering system. Aidon’s delivery to Vattenfall includes Energy Service Devices with latest generation radio communication technology, and a cloud based system solution.

The scope of the pilot is to evaluate smart metering technologies in real operation in around 1000 consumption points divided in two areas, rural and dense.

– Based on high demands, Vattenfall has evaluated a large number of qualified offers. Aidon offers a technical overall solution with a very interesting radio technology that Vattenfall has found interest in evaluating, says Christer Johansson, responsible for  metering strategy at Vattenfall Eldistribution AB.

– We are very proud of the opportunity to be selected in and deliver to Vattenfall’s project. Aidon’s technology has been successful in Norway with customers like Hafslund Nett, Skagerak Nett, Eidsiva Nett, Nettalliansen and others. We look forward to continued success on the Swedish market and see Vattenfall’s project confirming the start of the exchange to the next generation metering system, says Fredrik Rex, Managing director of Aidon in Sweden.

In the Aidon radio solution, the metering devices build autonomous micro networks with no need for installing extra radio infrastructure. The solution is designed for scalability and its robustness is based on automatic local re-routing and re-transmitting of lost data.

Aidon is currently deploying more than 1.5 million smart meters in Norway, based on the same RF technology. Elenia, Finland’s 2nd largest distribution system operator recently announced their decision to update part of their installed meter base by next generation smart meters based on Aidon radio technology.
